in the film, you will see the two pets, a labrador named duke and a poodle named snowball, spy on the owner max so that they can play on their terms. max’s father is deceased. he and his three sons, a french bulldog named gidget, a maltese named duke and a pomeranian named snowball, lived in a brownstone apartment building in new york city. it is soon revealed that max is a genius, who gets a 60% on his sat’s while his brothers get a d or an f. the entire city is fearful of his labrador being an assassin. max imagines a secret world where the pets come alive, and is a part of it. the studio wanted it to be an epic war movie, and it was played like one. the film has the heart of a screwball comedy, with plenty of hilarious plot twists.
the most hilarious part of the film is its reception when it was released in chinese cinemas. one of the film’s two directors, larry charles, also directed the 1992 film clueless. the chinese audiences were not amused with the film’s changes in setting to the 1930’s.

at the outset, it was reported that the filmmakers planned to make it an animated film but the live-action film came out. while it did well at the box office, the critical reception was mixed. furthermore, there were reports that the production company was so short on money that the film was shot almost all without dialogue. consequently, the animation process had to be rushed, leaving out most of the dialogue.
