Test Case Export to Excel is a small and easy to use application that enables the users to export test cases from Team Foundation Server to an excel sheet.
Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2010 enables the users to manage test cases as Work Item(s). The complete description of the test case along with steps can be managed as single Work Item in TFS 2010.

Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2010 enables the users to manage test cases as Work Items. The test cases are further tagged with version, priority and other metadata information. One ‘Work Item’ can contain multiple test cases. For example, in one ‘Work Item’ users can add multiple test cases like bug, requirement, test case, test, etc.
User can add and update the individual test cases from the ‘Work Item’ screen in the ‘Work Items’ tab. An example of ‘Work Item’ screen is shown in the below screenshot.

When the user updates any particular test case in a ‘Work Item’, the test case is given an ‘Id’ and ‘Description’ which acts as a unique identifier for it.

When a user selects a ‘Work Item’, the ‘Work Item’ screen displays the list of test cases and their respective ‘Id’ and ‘Description’ information as shown in the below screenshot.

If a user wants to export the test case details to Excel, he/she can use the ‘Export to Excel’ button located at the right side of the ‘Work Item’. The ‘Export to Excel’ button opens the ‘Work Item’ details in Excel 2007 and creates a new worksheet for the selected test case. The Worksheet ‘Name’ can be changed to anything as per the user requirement. Each row in the worksheet corresponds to a single test case in the work item. The users can assign individual test case to a work item as well. The ‘Test Case’ and ‘Case Number’ can be identified to be updated in the excel sheet as per user requirement.

Exporting test cases to Excel
In the below step-by-step instruction, we are going to export the selected test case ‘X’ to Excel using the ‘Export to Excel’ button. The selected ‘Work Item’ along with its associated test case is exported to Excel as shown in the below screenshot.

In TFS 2010, if you are running TFS under Team Project Server you can not export test cases to an Excel sheet from within the application. This is because they are considered as Team Projects and not individual items. The application enables the users to export test cases to a sheet and a test case with the more detailed description can be created against a specific test plan and user story.
The users can export test cases by specifying the test suites, test cases and the type of data they want to export and the application displays them on the screen with a button to export them to an excel sheet.
