At the time when the history of the past was being written, Kashmir was in the subcontinent of India. Kashmir was not a state, but it was a group of five princely states (Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Srinagar, Rajouri & Kathua) that had become independent before the British empire and later, the Union of India. These were five Pahars (throngs) and they came into existence after the conquest of the Kashmir valley by Muhammad of Ghor. {#s0035}
In the year 1707, the Afghans conquered Kashmir and made it a part of their territory, and ruled it from their capital, Kabul. In the year 1754, the Afghans were defeated by the Marathas (Arya king Nanaoji Peshwa, in his struggle with the British). The British captured the valley in 1819 and remained there until 1947, when India and Pakistan were formed and the British left. Until then, Kashmir had been divided by the international boundary. From the division of the Punjab in August, 1947, Kashmir came into the independent state of Jammu & Kashmir, which was later joined with India in the year 1949.
The history of the Jammu and Kashmir region is a history of the people, so the history of Jammu & Kashmir as a territory of India is a history of the people. When the history of the past is written, it must be a history of the people.
Islam was brought to Kashmir in the eighth century by the Gurkhas (Kushans). Muslims were also brought there by the Sikhs. All these religions are associated with Kashmir in the sense that they were here before there was any ruler who claimed to be an Islamic ruler, the Kalbeliya Muslims, Kashmiri Muslims, and Dogra Muslims. The princely state of Kashmir was inhabited by the Hindus, and there was no other religion than Hinduism in the state.
The Muslim invasion of Kashmir in the eighth century has to be seen in the context of two things: first, the turmoil in the Ganga valley where the people of the Ganga Valley were revolting against the kings from Punjab and the whole of the land was being affected by the invasions by the Huns, the Hunaic, and the Sasanians.
