as someone else noted, its not so much the case that it never happens, it is that it never happens when you want it to. as much as we all would like to believe that the latest piece of training equipment will never fail, you have to be prepared for that. of course, i have a confession to make, i got my kickr for christmas last year. this was after i had had quite a hard time getting started on my bbs 2012. i was very upset with that bike but by the end of the year, i was able to get that one back up and running. what this showed me is that often, a technical issue will happen when you least expect it to. that is why there was a surprising number of issues with the kickr that people reported. despite all of this, the kickr is still the best trainer that i have owned to date. i have no reason to believe that the newer kickr trainer or the ti trainer would be any different.
wahoo is still the best bang for the buck, but you need to start with their trainer. no support for them or their trainers leaves it pretty much up to you. this is a problem and the more expensive they are, the less likely you are to get a support for it. make sure you know how to and are willing to set it up yourself. once set up properly, this will provide a better experience for you, not only the trainer, but your heart rate monitor as well. it is a great trainer, but you need to know how to set it up and do it yourself. without a manual and no additional trainers, it will be a pain in the ass.
i have a wahoo alloy bmx+ and a bbs 2012 both purchased from mavic-usa (don’t know if they are still in business). bbs 2012 is a pain in the ass to set up but with a little time you can learn and have an easy time of it, even without a service manual. the number one issue with wahoo is that their software is buggy. i’ve had the trainer off since january and it still has very bad gps and fast and even hangs during calibration. i’ve tried couple of times to solve it myself by trying to replace the micro sd card, no success. i’ve contacted them and they’ve spent hours on the phone with me and they suggested they give me a full refund. i feel i have wasted my time with the trainer as long as there is no fix for the software. about everything else, i love it! its just the software! the best thing is that i can start it and then go, it will automatically recalibrate itself after a few seconds. so i can ride a really hard road ride in amsterdam, in the rain and get nice workout data out of it.
