One of the city’s most unique spaces will be restored once again after years of neglect when it comes to visitors.

The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave is one of the oldest and most significant exhibits in the Five Points West Initiative. It contains the hometown of Buffalo Bill Cody, the infamous frontier character and Wild West performer. In 1883, he died here after an accidental gunshot wound. Cody’s showman personality and “Buffalo Bill” persona helped lead to the creation of the Wild West, which evolved into the movies of Hollywood.

When the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave was originally built in 1883, it was originally intended as a house. The museum was first opened to the public in 1923. The museum was severely damaged in the September 11, 2001 attacks and has remained closed to the public ever since.

A city historic tax credit restoration program is providing a grant to $840,000 to restore the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave so that it can once again open to the public. The project involves a $3.2 million dollar capital project to restore the site, with a cost between $5.5 and $8.5 million dollars, depending on the cost of materials.

The grant is expected to be used to fund one-quarter of the cost of the project.

The five-story building, made of brick, has a glass box at the entrance. The museum will be opened to the public this fall, before the Buffalo Bills will face the Denver Broncos in the playoffs.

“I’m not sure it will still be standing” after the renovations are finished, said Barbara Carlson, executive director of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, which owns the museum and cemetery. “We don’t have money to do a roof anymore.”

The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave was donated to the city in 1950 by Linton and Ella Muscatine who established the museum. In 2009, the Muscatines were awarded the U.S. Treasury’s National Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.Q:
