mystikal was born christopher terrell leonard on october 24, 1974, in marrero, louisiana. the name mystikal was inspired by a cousin of the artist’s who he claimed drank a lot of “mystikal” (a.k.a. kool-aid) as a kid. he grew up in the new orleans suburb of metairie, where his father, a funeral director, served as his manager, and later joined the rap music scene as mystikal’s manager. leonard was one of the most gifted lyricists in the history of the new orleans music scene. he would soon find himself with a record deal and a no limit records contract.

in 1995, he released his debut album, mystikal. it peaked at number 21 on the billboard 200. but when the album failed to attain the kind of commercial success that no limit expected, mystikal took his career in a new direction. he left the label and signed with the independent label, big boy records, where he released his second album, mind of mystikal. it peaked at number seven on the billboard 200. in late 1996, mystikal signed with jive records, whose house dj, missy elliott, was responsible for bringing mystikal to the label. the result was mystikal’s third album, diamond in the ruff, which became his most successful release. it peaked at number six on the billboard 200, selling over 1.8 million copies in the united states.

on this album, mystikal takes us into the world of the criminal. he talks about his everyday life and the various ways he carries out his business. we also get to see a side of mystikal’s personality, where he doesn’t have to exaggerate, he is and is what he is. on “smoke dope ciggarette” he talks about a lifestyle and ways of living that are common amongst a majority of black people. the song talks about how most of the smokers smoke just because of how they live. if you want to give up smoking, you should listen to this song. “i’m gonna smoke you” also gives us a glimpse into how the mystikal “plays the game”. it’s the only time where we see mystikal talk about drugs and how he handles them. the song talks about the “mean streets”, and how one must be careful with drugs. the song talks about the dangers involved in using them and how they can affect someone who is inexperienced in their use. with that being said, it was a very good song and i think that it is a good addition to the mystikal album.

however, the man is a bit of a show-off. not content with simply singing, rapping and playing the guitar, mystikal has the most stunt-style takes to date. he raps over his own beat with blatant disregard for the flow, and he loves to show off his skills. he performs several freestyle rap skits on the album, the most hilarious of which goes by the name shit, damn, damn! in which he takes shots at every rapper in the biz, including katt williams and ja rule. mystikal raps, he raps and he raps some more. his reckless bravado is entertaining, but as a true new orleans musician, he must be embraced with caution. on the album, he sounds like he is a part of the new orleans style, but he is mostly taking over for the greats that came before him.
after hearing tarantula for the first time, it was impossible not to fall in love. with its infectious, new orleans-inspired production and mystikal’s soulful, nasally growl, the song always makes me think of being in the city. i saw mystikal perform the song a few times in early 2001, and it still has the same effect. tarantula is mystikal’s best solo effort yet. the dirty, swampy sound of new orleans musical influence and the song’s laidback, jungle beat are what make tarantula an instant classic. buy mystikal tarantula album zip
the album’s lead single shake ya ass, meanwhile, is classic mystikal. in the opening verse, mystikal sings, “girl i’m in my momma’s house, rocking this chicken on the floor, eatin’ up this chicken like i’m mrs. claus.” it’s a funny riff on the tradition of holiday turkey eating, but he also sings about his attempt to meet a girl on the internet. mystikal also writes about a lot of his home life, from explaining to the girl that he is a “soldier” to complaining that the girl won’t pick up the phone. in a clever turn of phrase, he raps about his “phone-cause i’m just wanna holla at ya.” (mystikal can’t just come over to her house, he has to call her!) and while the music is perfect for mystikal’s story, the chorus is still catchy enough to get stuck in your head.
