Greed or Growth – the ironies of oil production
After several months of carefully managed media intrusion, the British government has finally published its ‘Oil and Gas Strategy’ document. Politicians, policy makers and commentators are claiming to be in two minds about it.
‘The oil industry is riddled with problems’, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) declares. ‘The nationalisation of the industry must be our top priority.’
‘We must act to reduce our dependence on oil and invest in renewable energy and sustainable transport’, is the view of The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee (EAC).
‘It is a delusion to think we can solve environmental problems without tackling the problem of oil’, concludes the oil giant Shell.
‘We should be investing in research and development into oil as part of an integrated and holistic approach to reducing our reliance on oil’, say the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
‘What do we want out of our gas?’, asks the Green Party. ‘What will it take to get it?’, ask the EAC. ‘We need to have a single regulator to make sure we get the best deal for consumers and communities’, says Shell.
‘We need an energy policy that is owned and developed by the public sector’, say the ACCA. ‘A government that is prepared to invest in research and development’, say the EAC. ‘We need a comprehensive energy strategy that takes account of the whole economy and the global supply chain’, say the TUC.
‘We should be investing now in the long term’, suggest the ACCA. ‘No one knows how much oil the ground contains, nor what the price will be’, say Shell. ‘We should not be investing in a business that we don’t understand’, say the ACCA.
‘The government should not be investing in a business which doesn’t have public ownership as a cornerstone’, say the EAC. ‘Investors need to be committed to a range of long term policy and regulatory

Does anyone know whether it is possible to use the iStripper program to transcode a video, strip the audio tracks, then save the resulting video as Mp4 for iPhone/iPod Touch? I am using a Mac running OS 10.8. I would like to strip the audio tracks in the iStripper program, then move the resulting video files to my iPhone to watch the video on the phone.
