each hidden object scene has a clue which will help you figure out what you’re looking at. these clues will give you one or two objects (and some of them might be in places which are hard to find if you haven’t discovered everything in the room already). if you can figure out how to click on these clues, you can get the cursed objects and then will get another clue, or if you get enough the objects will be assembled. if you need a hint to figure out what something is, you can call up your hint screen. if you can’t figure out a clue, you’ll get a hint for the clue.

the included hint meter refills very quickly in curse of briar rose, too. i never found myself with a hint for two hours, and sometimes i found myself having hints leftover from prior puzzles. that might have just been because i solved a few puzzles earlier, and then played it casually a couple of times, but you never get the sensation of being fenced in like you do with certain games, like the memory room: an ancient mystery.

the cursed objects themselves are the star of the show here, and if you’ve played any of the previous games, you’re going to be happy to see them back. they range from very simple (you can sense the presence of something in an object, but you don’t know what it is yet.) to crazy (you’d need the secret alliance to build a machine that uses a sword to lift a rock – just to prove what kind of crazy game this is!). some are easy, some are rather difficult to spot. but the good news is you can save your game at any time. so if you see a particularly bad object (you’re not sure what it is, but it doesn’t look like anything you’ve seen before), you can save your game and come back to it later.
