This study is designed to assess quality of life (QOL) changes in elderly patients with operable breast cancer who receive adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT). Baseline QOL was assessed using the Short Form-12 (SF-12) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaires. Patients were asked about the intensity of their symptoms and their surgical and medical complications over the previous week using a “run-in” questionnaire. Baseline QOL was also assessed in chemotherapy-naïve patients as a reference, and after 3, 6, and 12 months. After the initiation of ACT, in the group of patients who were still alive and had completed adjuvant ACT, the SF-12 physical score (P <.001) and the SF-36 physical component summary (P =.005) decreased significantly, whereas the SF-36 mental component summary (P =.007) and SF-12 mental (P =.005) scores increased. The SF-12 physical score was correlated with worse performance status (P =.009) and higher incidence of symptoms (P <.001). Within the ACT group, the SF-36 mental component summary was correlated with worse performance status (P =.005) and increased abdominal discomfort (P =.015). Within the group of patients who had received ACT, the SF-12 physical scores were correlated with worse performance status (P <.001) and increased fatigue (P =.027). Improvement of QOL was observed within the first 12 months of ACT. The effects on QOL were more extensive than those observed following surgery
