Pathfinder RPG: Shattered Star AP 1: Shards of Sin is the first of a series of volumes in the Pathfinder RPG Shattered Star AP series, each detailing a major city in the Shattered Star region of Golarion.
Thirteen full-color, full-page maps are printed alongside descriptions of the major political and economic institutions of the city in question. The “Shards of Sin” scenario is detailed on the last of the thirteen pages, plus a short, space-saving handout that contains pertinent information for the adventure, stats for the featured monsters, and four easy-to-use tokens for quick area encounters.
This introductory volume of Shattered Star AP is written by up-and-coming Pathfinder Adventure Path writer Greg A. Vaughan, whose previous Pathfinder RPG novels include “Scions of the City” and “Pathfinder Player Companion: the Scoundrel.”
In addition, this volume contains an adventure for 1st-level characters, plus “Riddleport,” a full-length Pathfinder Journal article by Bill Ward.

Story:
Phantom Trigger follows the story of twenty-year-old Seth Horne, an emotionally disturbed young man who is prone to strange visions and delusions. One day, Seth encounters a mysterious man dressed in a suit of shining metal and asks for his help. He must find a special instrument before his life is destroyed, however, as his quest holds great significance for Seth’s future.
Featuring such characters as a mime with a body of molds, a man who controls darkness and light, a being with a solid body and an animated reflection, and a powerful being who plays god to human kind, Phantom Trigger is a story of confusion, exhilaration, and wisdom about the human condition. The dangers and excitement of the game’s plot is only a small part of the game’s fun, however; the game’s two endings will prompt you to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding the game’s original soundtrack.
I don’t know what I would have done without the soundtrack. I liked the game itself, but I’m willing to bet that it would’ve been much less enjoyable without the soundtrack and its many mysteries. The answer is always in the second ending for the game, but even without knowing that, the soundtrack conveys a different feeling than the usual gaming soundtrack. From the piano-heavy music that opens the game to the dramatic arrangement of “You Went Behind My Back Again” and the powerful guitar harmonies of “Morning, Honey”, the soundtrack and its openings and endings make me feel different emotions.
That second ending makes me sad. It’s a totally different ending, but for some reason it just hit me harder than the first one. If it was a choice between the two, I’d have picked the first one. The quality of the game itself is there, though. It’s definitely one of the better action/RPGs, but the best part is how the soundtrack and the story ties it all together.
The tracks aren’t all that memorable, but they’re all good enough to work. Each one has a different feel to it. Each one isn’t especially memorable, but the soundtrack works. The song “You Went Behind My Back Again” is one of the best tracks in the game, but it’s no “Rest In Peace” or “Aftermath” from Final Fantasy VI. The track is haunting and dramatic, and it fits the atmosphere of the game really well. In the beginning, Seth hears the ghost

Faction Wars is a dice and one-shot game in which players earn faction points (FP) by “defeating” another player by taking the majority of his/her capital, consumed artifacts or resources. If all resources are consumed or if the target of a battle is defeated using dice rolls then one of the players will have exceeded the FP threshold for that game (typically around 700-1000 FP). If the opposing faction’s thresholds are exceeded they will lose a special currency called “Cumulative Losses” (CL). (Basic graphic including Faction Wars rules is attached).
When a player has exhausted his or her resources he or she may choose to declare war on the opposing faction. The declared player will then attempt to capture an enemy NPC at an adjacent location to his or her player-controlled location or to take a resource for free. If an enemy NPC is captured the declared player may choose to either replace him/her with an animal foe or take one of his skills into play. Training camp skills and animal skills may be taken multiple times or stolen from an opposing faction to gain a cumulative training bonus.
The attacking player is awarded XP for gaining training points (TP) which usually include bonuses for taking specific skills, attack types (eg, sword, bow, whips, etc) weapon types (eg, Greatsword, Shortsword) and the attributes of the achieved foe. Sometimes, faction levels are granted with FP to help one progress more quickly through the game.
The number of FP gained during a “capture” depends on the rarity of the foe in question. For example, a dragon may grant 500 FP if it is captured.
