this etude is in a-flat major and stylistically provides a nice contrast to the other etudes. application of the sostenuto style is especially important because of the cut-time marking set at the tempo of allegro moderato. the musical result should be dance-like and there should be maximum effort to maintain a connection of the musical lines. the forte-piano (fp)markings in mm. 18, 20, 42, and 44 should be treated as breath accents (>). ensure there is a quick enough decay to hear a softening of the half-notes. one of the many benefits of the grigoriev studies is their usage to work on and develop your loud playing skills with the eventual goal of using more wind flow with minimal exertion. tension in the body will diminish your output. forced effort will make this etude challenging. perform mm. 25-40 daily as an excerpt to work on and enhance your ability to play loud, yet in a controlled manner. continue to raise the performance level of your louder dynamics with this excerpt. throughout the etude be sure to experiment with the phrasing and dynamics so that there is a continuous musical line represented by your performance.

Performance Guide: The studies are all in G major with minimal shifts in the harmony. The rhythm is divided into 6/8, 3/4 and 8/8, sometimes with a central bar of 6/8. The style is very jazzy. There is rhythmic motion in nearly every measure and considerable dynamic contrast is utilized in the fingering. The first etude is dominated by the trill and tremolo passages and the rhythmical and rhythmic concepts of the rhythm are explained in the beginning. The second etude introduces some dazzling octave leaps that are similar to what is utilized in modern jazz. The third etude is a multi-rhythmic piece of extremely high conceptual difficulty. The main challenge of this etude is the speed of the passages. The student will need to work fast and strong in every moment. The passages are slow, starting with a slow beginning and gradually increasing speed until the very ending. There will also be a lot of shifts and changes from 3/4 to 6/8, slower and faster combinations, and rhythmic motion. Practice diligently with this etude to master this concept. The last etude is a repetition of the main material of the first two etudes. Once again, note the fast and slow developments. There are passages of slow arpeggios followed by fast arpeggios. There are octave leaps in the first section. For the second section the octave leaps are in the opposite direction. Some of the last parts are marked mf-sost and these will be emphasized. The student will practice this last etude to develop their technique to execute these passages with sufficient speed and strength. Continue to improve your chops and work your way through the studies slowly. Eventually the student will have mastered all aspects of the studies and will be able to play full-length pieces from start to finish without stopping or going back to the beginning.
