The Eyes of the People is the fifth chapter of a standalone continuation of Half-Life: A Place in the West by Half-Life creators Valve, published by Valve.
As the events of Half-Life: A Half-Life 2. Episode 2: Escape from Gorihave come to an end, the player will now be able to continue the game’s story in Half-Life: A Place in the West, a new standalone adventure that continues the research for Gordon’s escape from City 17.
The fifth chapter of the game is the conclusion of the storyline set during the revolution in New Franklin and introduces the player to original characters and locations unseen in the rest of the Half-Life 2 story.

Description

The Eyes of the People is the fifth chapter in the Half-Life: A Place in the West saga, and continues the story of New Franklin – an American enclave with a mysterious cosmic tower at its heart.

It’s the night of New Franklin’s annual masquerade banquet, and the city’s political rivals vie for dominance amongst a blind and apathetic populace seeking shelter from a wicked blizzard. Governor Moore, aiming to install himself as the city’s leader, plots to assassinate Major General Long at the evening’s end, whilst Long himself prepares to move against Sejal Rajani’s Opposition in an effort to apprehend the vortigaunt Dreyfus.

And on the fringes of the city, away from the lights of the masquerade, Albert Kempinski takes matters into his own hands to find his kidnapped daughter – with disastrous results…

It’s a slick, atmospheric adventure/puzzle game and proof that beautiful graphics are not enough to make a game fun. You’re Batman, mowing down the Joker’s henchmen, sneaking up on the Joker and smashing the Penguin’s hand off in mid air. You’re Gordon and you can hear the cops chasing you, and you’re Wayne in the mansion, sneaking around, and you’re Catwoman on the rooftop. Its a game of action, stealth and puzzle, but you have plenty of room to manoeuvre and be creative. There are no real goals here – this is more about the excitement of the storytelling.It’s not just about picking up a tool and bashing things, it’s about a surreal environment. You’re fighting a battle for survival, but within that, you’re battling for a world which has seen too much. It’s as if you’re the last surviving member of the human race, and you must use your last remaining clues and your wits to survive. It’s a beautiful, wonderfully surreal environment – and the overall visual design is just stunning.

The gameplay is slick – you sneak around the environments, and each area has its own design. You’re Batman and the house has high walls, so you’re sliding on your back to get up, and its a great use of the controller. Its all about the controls, which are very responsive. But if you’ve got a gamepad then there’s even more to it. You can use the B button to attack, the X button to jump and use the Y button to climb. It’s easy to use and well-paced. You’re Batman and you can smash the tables or glass and use them to get up. Its about the control, its about mixing up your fighting and going for the stealthy method.

You’re a ninja, you’re a detective, you’re a karate fighter – you’re Batman. In a way its quite similar to the Arkham series, which may make people a bit hesitant, but it’s nothing like the Arkham series. It’s also fun, and you can still get the glory and the notoriety of being a Batman.
