it is not entirely clear why the little blue team are better than the spider-man squad, although some might argue that without the red team, spider-man would have to balance between saving the world and saving kids, thereby stopping the world from being saved. these five kids are all recruited at the same time as spider-man in the opening movie scene, and they are named after famous heroes – the flash, the human torch, the martian manhunter, the iceman, and, of course, the green goblin.

spider-man first arrives in new york city, but that story is a little short. it does serve as a tutorial for a longer story that eventually occurs (and i’ll get to that). in all, the ps2 spider-man sequel takes 3-5 hours of gameplay. the story alone might be short, but some of the missions have an intriguing back-story – you will be asked to not only stop crime, but also stop people from getting kidnapped. some of the big villains in the comic book are present, though they do not really do much in this game. the red team is not at all invulnerable, and in fact can be hurt by some of the same green team attacks. the final boss is a lot more amusing than it sounds.

this game can be regarded as an early beat-em-up-and-run-back-and-try-to-avoid-getting-beat-up type of game. for example, as you go through the level, you can really only fight one or two enemies at once. you’ll have to hit them quickly and avoid getting hit in return. they cant keep up with you, and, quite honestly, no one really can. combat is a little sluggish at times. you’ll have to use blocks to jump over spikes and enemy attacks to defend yourself. as mentioned, you are able to block most of the time, and you can even dodge enemy attacks to the point that you can almost cross the screen without taking any damage. when you do take damage, there are hearts around the map that you can drain to regenerate your health. if you get hit three times in one area, you die.
