There are, of course, a number of different possibilities with loops in Stylus RMX. You can sequence them, burn them to CD or DVD or run them at the song tempo. Alternatively, you can trigger them from the key you’re in, or even from another MIDI channel, so you could have one sequenced set of drums with a different set of loops triggered off the same keyboard.

The new Stylus RMX software is part of the new Stylus RMX Pro software. This release includes five loops (the other 25 loops were in the previous Stylus RMX), plus the ability to import multis and Stylus tracks.

With Stylus RMX Pro, you can trigger loops at the start, end, or while in between each part and at a number of instants including the end of a part or the beginning of another part. When triggered, each loop can, in turn, be triggered again when the Stylus audio signal is stopped. Alternatively, you can trigger Stylus tracks, so you can have a group of tracks played together, or triggered one after the other. It’s a great way to create complex and sometimes unexpected rhythmic patterns. One problem is that each loop element will play back a pattern until you use the Stop transport button, so if you have a few drum and bass loops, each one will play in its own time until you tell it to stop. You can set a MIDI-channel-based automatic start (one which you can control with the Bend knob). You can also assign keyboard mappings to any of the Edit Group parameters. You can save, export and load single, group and multis, as you would expect.

Groove Control loops, like REX files, are triggered from a chromatic ‘ramp’ of MIDI notes, so you can edit the MIDI data to change the order in which the slices play back if you wish. In previous Groove Control libraries, you had to find the controlling MIDI file that matched the loop, and then import it into your host sequencer for editing, but in Stylus RMX, loops can be auditioned from within a browser, then the selected loop name can be dragged directly into any sequencer that supports drag-and-drop MIDI file import. The outcome is the same as before, but this time the program does the work of finding the right MIDI file for you. If your sequencer doesn’t support drag and drop (like Pro Tools), you can drag the loop name to the desktop to create a copy of the MIDI file, which can then be imported conventionally. You can also play loops directly from within Stylus RMX and then record them as audio if you prefer, if your host sequencer allows audio to be recorded from plug-ins. User-defined sets of grooves, kits and eight-part multis can be saved separately (multis include all effects, mixer and Chaos settings). Finally, REX files may now be imported, so there is a way to get your own beat-sliced material into Stylus RMX at last.
