“Don’t make excuses, just do it.”

When I was in high school I was made fun of for my lack of athleticism. I would have to run laps, but could never find the energy to run around the track. All my energy would go into cheering. But, time and again, I was singled out for my lack of physical prowess. And I was even told that I would never be able to play basketball.

I was the first in my family to go to college. My parents never graduated high school, so my parents never had a career or stable income. They were also drug addicts, so I was raised in an environment where people had a hard time holding a job. Eventually, I would live with an aunt and uncle, with whom I was mostly raised. I felt a great deal of pressure to succeed in my academics and finish high school.

I was overly-critical of myself. When I would run laps, I would look down at my thighs
