Early History:
Originally created as a platform to teach programming to older children, Roblox began to attract children who were interested in programming. By 2007, Roblox was primarily used by children. When the platform launched in 2006, it had three programming languages for different types of programming: Python for mathematical games, Java for games based on characters and logic, and Lua for creative games, such as role-playing and sandbox games.
In 2008, Roblox experienced its first major growth and launched a new programming language, Lua, for its creative games. In 2009, the Company began to develop a new feature called Neighborhoods, which creates a virtual world for users to meet up and play games with one another. The first neighborhood was created in 2009 as a beta environment. The players had to wait until 2012 to become permanent members.
In 2010, Roblox launched two more programming languages, Java and Unity, and increased the number of games that can be created through scripting, such as physics games. This year also marked the start of a Roblox summer camp, which taught children how to program in the Lua programming language. Between 2012 and 2016, users continued to increase in number, and by 2016, Roblox had over 100 million monthly active users, primarily children.
