Photoshop also comes with a built-in layers panel, similar to those found in other image-editing software programs (see Figure 12-5), where you can load, organize, and manage your various graphics that you create as different layers in the image.

The layers panel is used to separate various elements within an image. You can have as many layers as you like, and each one can contain any of the following:

* **Elements:** You can create different objects within an image by using layers. For example, you can create the main subject of an image and then add a background to the image to give the subject some context (see Figure 12-6).
* **Grayscale or color masks:** A color mask can be used to remove portions of an image that are already color. A grayscale mask can be used to remove portions of an image that are already color. You can use different masks to create different effects such as water, plants, fabric, and so on.
