What’s the difference between raster and vector?

Raster image editing is the primary tool used by the graphic artist. Figure 13-2, left, shows a set of raster images.

The raster format is a computer file in which each color-filled dot is a pixel, the little squares of color. The number of pixels makes the image or graphic large or small. The pixels are all the dots.

The primary purpose of the raster-type image is to show and enhance a printed page.

A vector image is made up of lines and curves, not little squares of color. Vector-type images are often used for documents, such as business reports and training materials, that can be scaled up or down without losing clarity.

The lines and curves represent graphic elements, such as letters, numbers, and things like that. A vector-type graphic is made up of a line or curve, so a font might be called a vector font.

How to Choose a Focal Length

Before you can properly edit images, you need to understand what focal length is and how to adjust it. You need to know how to calculate and measure focal length.

Choosing the right focal length is very important as this will determine how the camera will capture the information that you see in your camera. To explain, imagine you have an apple on a tree. If you take a picture of the apple from far away, it will appear rather small.

If you take a picture of it closer, the apple will appear larger. This is because a closer picture will capture the whole apple from top to bottom but a wider angle will only capture the apple from side to side.

If you take a picture of a caterpillar from a distance, it will look like a line or even a small dot. If you take a picture from up close, then the caterpillar will appear more detailed.

Understanding the Focal Length

The focal length of your camera is the distance between the lens and the sensor. If you have a digital camera, the lens is the closest object to the sensor. If you have a DSLR, the lens is usually closest to the eye and the sensor is in-between.

It is very important to understand this concept for two reasons:

1) To understand what focal length you should take for different subjects. You need to decide for yourself if you want to take an image in macro, wide angle, normal, portrait, closeup, wide angle, portrait, or narrow angle.

2) To understand the difference between cropping an image, zooming, and recompose.

Note: There are 2 different focal lengths for a DSLR. The wider focal length is also known as the telephoto lens. It is best for shooting objects that are far away and it will capture a large amount of information. The narrower focal length is also known as the wide angle lens. It is best for shooting subjects that are near or objects that are not very far away.

Q:

TypeError: Cannot read property’setInterval’ of null

I’m having an issue with a setInterval() function, the goal is to get data from a remote database every 5 seconds (with PHP). The data return from the $.ajax() call is stored in an array and data is added to it and set to a variable in order to be used in an image loader (I know it’s not working as I need to test it). I’m getting an error stating that’setInterval(.) is not a function’. I have set the interval as follows:

The PHP script returns a large amount of data, around 500 rows and 11 columns. The data is correctly stored and printed to the console, but when I try and use ajax_load_data(); in the image loader, it returns an error saying that setInterval is not a function.
