6.1, 7.2, and 7.2.5 are considered the standard – the basic number of channels which a given receiver might have. Any receiver above about $500 will almost always offer 7.2 channels, allowing for seven speakers and two subwoofers. Even cheaper models, like the Denon AVR-S750H, come with 7.2 speaker channels. A 6.1 system would include three front channels (a center speaker, designed to sit under your TV, and two bigger ones just off to the left and right), and two on either side of the listening position. A 7.1 would add two more, behind you. A 9.1 or 11.1 system is where you start adding height speakers – something only a few receivers can actually take, like the incredible Denon AVR-X8500H, which offers a massive thirteen channels. This kind of thing is usually undertaken when you have a large room, and don’t mind doing some DIY to mount your speakers! Worth noting: the subwoofer channels (the.1 or.2) will require their own power, meaning you’ll use a different connection to that from your speakers. We’ll go into this in more detail below. And some receivers, like the cheaper Denon above, also allow you to expand your channel quota by adding more amps into the mix. 6.1 and 7.2 is essentially designed to give the maximum depth of surround sound, and even 7.2.5 allows for this for a more reasonable cost (though the big downside to it is that it takes two more amps to match the 7.2.5 model’s full power rating).

This is in terms of matching each speaker with the right drivers – especially the woofers – and a frequency response that runs as close to flat as you can get it. There are many companies producing digital set-top boxes in various configurations. In general, they fall into four groups: those with a built-in processor (a x86 CPU), those with an ARM CPU (either by Marvell or Freescale), those with a MIPS CPU (either by Marvell or Broadcom) and those based on one of the many smaller single-core designs available, generally using a PowerPC architecture. The Marvell SDKs that we have been using for the Microbox project are not compatible with most of those CPUs, as they are based on MIPS, so we are using a Freescale i.MX6D. The Marvell Cortex-A9 CPU used in the AT&T Dendy Mobile HD+ (which has a similar, but smaller, form factor than the Microbox) is based on a 28nm Tri-Gate process, so this development is still based on “quite old” technology. Nevertheless, the market for mobile applications is more and more demanding, and we can imagine that the platform is going to continue to be used for different applications, just like the Marvell processor. Of course, we cannot make any claims as to the performance of the Marvell processor, but the processor used in the Microbox is considerably faster than the processor used in the Dendy and the design is of course very different.
Many receivers include on-screen display (OSD) settings, a feature which gives the user access to information such as the TV channel, TV audio mode, whether the receiver is receiving TV or radio, TV time or DVD status, network settings and so forth. The OSD also permits the control of most of the audio settings, such as volume, balance, input selection and more. This makes the OSD user friendly, and means the user can adjust these settings by pressing the +/- buttons.
