this should make it easy to get you up and running with vandal as quickly as possible. the controls for the amp section are pretty much the same as for the amp plugins from ve, ve-heb and other magix plugins, although the sliders are a bit different. the controls have been refined and extended, and you can tweak the settings as you like. you still have access to a mix knob as you do with a real amp, and there are a lot of tools to tweak and mess around with.
the sound of vandal is pretty much perfect, and it’s easy to switch between presets to find somethingthat works for you. the presets are all based on real amps and speakers, and come in a wide variety of flavours, though some are for more difficult-to-realistic presets and others are more suited to the’real amp’ presets. the ‘clean’ preset is one that i usually switch to first, as i find that it’s a better starting point than the other presets, which tend to be more aggressive and ‘dirty’. in between these, there’s the crunch preset, the lead preset, and the ‘dirty’ presets. the presets are all balanced fairly well, and they have a basic control over compression and chorus, but there are some oddities. in particular, the chorus preset sounds great on leads, but not so much on the other presets. ‘hot’ settings for a tube amp or amp set up for marshall stacks are very unusual, and tend to end up sounding funny. of course, you can do what you want, and there are loads of presets that emulate real amps in the magix web site, but i’m not sure what point they are trying to make. i do like that there are presets for both analogue and digital tube amps, though, so if you fancy building your own, you can.
i’d be happy to give vandal a whirl, and i can see it working well for recording smaller bands with just a single guitarist and bassist, or even with a solo guitar player. it’s a little expensive, but it could be a good solution if you’re a studio newcomer who’s looking for a bargain. and it’s certainly more flexible than most of its daw rivals.
plus i have to say that i really, really liked the presets that magix put together for me. i set the amp up for a gig, added a mic, hooked it up to a console, and played around with some of the presets to see how they sounded. it was a lot of fun, and the presets that i picked are sound familiar to me. although they’re not all at my level, i think they are great examples of how to set up the amp for a particular sound.
the most obvious limitation is the size of the display, which can only accommodate just over a word of text per parameter, and so isn’t really suitable for a detailed display of the characteristics of each of the 12 effects, either. vandal is written for a single window environment, and although there are some more advanced features, like the ability to record your effects, it is aimed primarily at guitarists. in one of the more annoying omissions, there is no provision for choosing between a real-time effects loop and a record/playback effects loop, meaning that you can only record your performance, with any recorded sound buried deep inside the effect. for live use, this would be a real problem.
vandal is aimed primarily at guitar players, and is therefore highly adept at tuning your guitar or bass, although it lacks a display of the results of the last tuning; this could be particularly useful if you’re making a recording, and want to check your guitar or bass before committing it to tape.
