Twenty-eight New Zealand white rabbits were randomly allocated to seven groups: sham operation (n=6); peritoneal suturing (n=6); the mesh-plating method (n=8); the mesh-plating method plus peritoneal suturing (n=8); the peritoneal suturing plus ligation of serosal adhesions (n=8); aqueous methanol (n=4); and saline (n=4). All animals underwent MR tagging imaging and ultrasonography three weeks after surgery. The adhesion grade was determined by tagging imaging, and the adhesion area was calculated with an image analysis system. The maximum adhesion area was measured by ultrasonography, and the ultrasonographic adhesion grade was calculated according to the area. The incidence of adhesions on the mesentery observed by ultrasonography was significantly lower in rabbits treated with peritoneal suturing plus ligation of serosal adhesions than in the other groups (P=0.019); whereas, the incidence of adhesions identified by MR tagging imaging was not significantly different among the groups (P=0.625). The adhesion area was significantly decreased in the rabbits treated with peritoneal suturing plus ligation of serosal adhesions (P=0.014). Ultrasonography provides a good visualization of the adhesion tissue, whereas MR tagging imaging does not. Early treatment of peritoneal suturing plus ligation of serosal adhesions may reduce the formation of postoperative peritoneal adhesions in rabbits.Q:
