facebook has been at the center of a social media firestorm, and the largest data dump in history, as it relates to the cambridge analytica scandal. facebook pledged to changing its ways in the wake of that scandal and vowed to be a more transparent and ethical company, as well as protecting peoples privacy. still, at first glance, the latest data dump reveals that facebook has a long way to go in addressing some of these issues.

the largest such breach to date revealed the phone numbers and associated facebook ids of over 540 million accounts, of users located in the us, uk, and canada. in total, these were more than 27 million people. within the database were detailed records of people on facebook with up to 1.5 billion data points, including their profile photos, friends, and ages.

this type of information isnt unique to facebook, in that instagram, twitter, and tumblr have their own data sharing policies; however, both facebook and instagram have been under scrutiny because of how they have stored and handled peoples information. for the time being, facebooks parent company, mark zuckerberg, has not appeared in public as reports surfaced about this incident. we will update this post as more information becomes available.
