The film was announced as based on an original story developed by Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects). He had also written the short story that was adapted into the 2002 novel Goldfinger, and was hired as the screenwriter for the upcoming film. McQuarrie and Sam Mendes had a “productive and constructive” collaboration on Skyfall and were working together on the new script. McQuarrie was hired to re-write an original story which would fit with the “whimsical flavour” of the film.
