Managing dependencies of a C++ singleton

I am writing a large codebase (24000 lines of code) in C++ and I would like to use a singleton pattern. I have never done something like this before and I would like to figure out what are some of the issues you need to be aware of. I am using g++ for compiling and MinGW for the development.
I am aware of a few issues (like a singleton cannot have static members which will result in the object being destroyed on every stack unwind). However, I would like to know if there are additional concerns that arise when designing a singleton in this kind of environment.
What are some issues or problems you need to be aware of when designing singletons for C++?
For example, is there a standard or industry-standard way of dealing with imported files? What if I have a C-style static inline function that returns a class instance? Do you just store the object in a global (or class) variable (doesn’t work well with stack unwinding) or you need to allocate it on the heap?

For unit testing/debugging, try running the program with gdb. This will allow you to inspect the object lifecycle and breakpoints.
