  I used to be fairly sociable. We’re the kind of family that talks on the phone and visits like two peas in a pod, and fishing with Dad I never felt that I was the odd one out.

  Maybe you don’t remember him, but he was the short pale guy with a moustache that were both too big for his cute face. He was a partner in a building firm and owned or occupied half of our street in Bristol, most of his summer holidays were spent in a caravan in the North of Scotland with Dad’s friend and best friend Terry, a postman.

  Dad wasn’t Scottish, though he told us he had been born and bred in Gloucester. That’s how he spoke too, but he was as far north of Scotland as granny was north of the border. He didn’t go to school himself, though he’d done some school coaching and was a certificated sports teacher if you can be certified for sports teaching. He wanted to be a tennis coach, he would have been a good one too, but he started off in college, then taught at the school I went to and held a post in Hamilton. Wherever he went, Dad fished, and always explained that the way he made money doing it was by dragging people along to do it. He didn’t know about being sociable, but there was a sort of jolly warm open laughing chemistry about him that made people want to get on with him.

  Dad owned a garage and brought fishing stuff home with him when he was onto a new thing. His garage was filled with a stunning variety of outdoor gear, and we didn’t know anyone who did better. The most important thing he bought was a panoramic camera. It’s a pair of binoculars on arms so you can pan and tilt and its lens is as big as a pea, in fact it’s called binoculars because it hasn’t got any magnification in it. Dad was always mounting up the fish he photographed, and telling Dad with a big grin (without being accused of seeing fish as meals) would always say that he had seen them too late.
