This invention relates to a method for metallurgical manufacture of steel by the electric arc furnace (EAF) process. More particularly, the invention relates to a method for reducing slag in the steel product produced by the EAF process.
In the steel making process, molten pig iron is tapped into a process vessel where the molten iron and its entrained impurities are oxidized to produce molten steel. The molten steel is formed into hot steel in the process vessel known as an electric arc furnace (EAF). Ordinarily, the hot steel, or molten metal as it exits from the furnace vessel, is ladled to a casting machine where the molten steel is cast into ingots and slabs which are subsequently removed from the casting machine for further processing. The hot steel emerging from the EAF is ladled approximately at the required pouring level to enable it to be treated in the casting machine to produce the ingots or slabs.
The hot steel poured into the casting machine is exposed to air as it exits from the EAF vessel, and this air can attack the hot steel causing it to cool and solidify before it can enter the casting machine. To prevent the hot steel from cooling too rapidly, the hot steel must be enveloped with an inert gas. Normally, the EAF process is operated at a temperature of between about 2250.degree. F. to about 2750.degree. F. and uses an inert gas, such as argon, to protect the hot steel from cooling too rapidly.
The hot steel ladled into the casting machine is exposed to air while it is being cast. Therefore, the hot steel, as it exits from the EAF process, is normally ladled into a molding machine, such as a sequence
