During play, things happen, and as the game progresses, new ideas and inspiration spring forth from the players. This is not a static game where things play out the same way every time.

The players need an incentive to bring their characters forward and make sacrifices. There are several ways to do this.

Short Term Goals:

A player character in a survival situation without immediate aid must decide whether to live or die. And if they do die, it won’t be a quick, painless death. The player will want to find a way to continue playing, and if that means making a sacrifice, the player should feel happy to do so.

Long Term Goals:

Players will want to bring their characters to their goals, which might mean using skill challenges, exploration, or social skills.

Strengths:

Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Intrigue draws inspiration from the classic sources for PC settings, such as The Pillars of Eternity and Baldur’s Gate
For as much as it evokes the core ideas of classic RPGs, it also covers a modern audience of gamers. Although it includes all the trappings of a traditional game, Ultimate Intrigue also emphasizes the ability for players to come up with new ideas and ways of playing.

Weaknesses:

The game is still in development, so anyone playing it at this time may see a few things that are unfinished or buggy. Ultimately, the core mechanics are solid, though.

Systems:

Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Intrigue uses a customizable d10 mechanic for its basic attribute and skill rolls. You may choose your own method of tracking your attributes or skills, or stick with the defaults. Basic stats are also tracked using a d10 mechanic, but the system is intentionally customizable, allowing characters to be built in a variety of ways.

Player vs. player combat is classic RPG, with a d20-based combat system. Ultimate Intrigue offers a system of influence, allowing characters to manipulate others as part of their play.

Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Intrigue features a mission system that helps players come up with new ideas, each with unique rewards. In addition, many of the individual encounters and tasks in the setting have a Level that is based on difficulty.
