Rotary encoders are known in the prior art as evidenced by the above referenced patent to Carlson et al., U.S. Pat. No. 3,912,123. One of the purposes for such rotary encoders is to detect rotation of a shaft. In the past, such rotary encoders have typically utilized one Hall effect sensor, one stationary Hall effect sensor, and a counting pulse generator which is responsive to movement of the rotary member and which is coupled to the Hall effect sensors in a predetermined manner to generate a counting pulse signal or count-on pulses when a predetermined phase relationship exists between the movement of the rotary member and the movement of the rotary member and Hall effect sensors, respectively. Rotary encoders have additionally included a reset system to remove the count-on pulses from the pulse signal produced by the counting pulse generator, and an indicating device to indicate whether the counted-on pulses or the return pulses have been counted. In the prior art such rotary encoders have suffered from the drawback that the Hall effect sensors must be accurately and precisely placed relative to the rotary member, and relative to one another and relative to the counting pulse generator and the reset system, and furthermore, the Hall effect sensors are essentially useless when the shaft is stopped or when the phase relationship between the counting pulse signal, the Hall effect sensor and the rotary member is altered from one counting cycle to the next. For instance, should a failed Hall effect sensor be incorrectly positioned within the Hall circuit, or should the Hall effect sensors be incorrectly positioned relative to the counting pulse generator, the counting pulse signal will not be reset, and the indicating device will indicate to the user that the rotary encoder has failed. Such faulty rotary encoders are obviously unsuitable for use. The present invention recognizes the fact that two Hall effect sensors can be placed in the Hall circuit of a typical rotary encoder in a manner to provide the desired signals, and more particularly, two Hall effect sensors which are positioned to sense rotation of a shaft in two mutually perpendicular directions. To this end, the Hall effect sensors, or a combination of two Hall effect sensors, are mounted upon a yoke which has a top surface, a bottom surface and a plurality of side surfaces. The yoke also has a pair of magnetically sensitive portions which are typically positioned so as to be adjacent the Hall effect sensors. The two magnetically sensitive portions are located to effect such mutual positioning of the yoke and Hall effect sensors as desired to maximize the Hall effect output signal. Moreover, the Hall effect sensors are mounted upon the yoke in a manner to reduce the possibility of damage thereto, as by banging against other structures during a mounting process. The Hall effect sensors are, for instance, mounted to the yoke in a manner where they cannot be damaged by jarring or other such misalignments during mounting. The Hall effect sensors are also readily positioned in a desired position, such as being precisely aligned with the top and bottom surfaces of the yoke so that they are precisely located at a predetermined angle relative to one another.
