According to a news release from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, five current or former Auburn University graduates have been selected to enter the Ph.D. program at Alabama’s historically black college, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, “for completion of a dissertation in neuroscience.”

Inmates enrolled in the PhD program will work toward a Ph.D. in neuroscience with an emphasis on social cognitive neuroscience for the first two semesters of their enrollment. After that, inmates will take a gap year to plan for the remainder of their dissertation.

“We are very excited about Dr. Green’s selected inmate participants,” said Corrections’ Deputy Commissioner John Harrison in the news release. “By offering inmates the opportunity to pursue a Ph.D., we will further demonstrate our partnership with Auburn to help these participants find employment upon release from prison. Auburn University has a long-standing history of providing valuable job-skill training to inmates and this will be another way we show inmates that we are committed to helping them prepare for a successful life following their incarceration.”

So far, Auburn and UAB have worked with nine inmates to prepare for and obtain Ph.D. degrees, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Green has agreed to serve as an academic advisor for the inmates, which means she will help connect them to the university. She has participated in two rounds of interviews, accepted two students and expects additional interviews this week.

Green is one of only several PhD professors at Auburn and one of the first in Alabama. She is also recognized nationally for the breadth of her research and her understanding of how criminals think.
