As Vergil increasingly began to see Nero as a rival, he made his move by opening a new Hell Gate near a nearby church and battles with Nero’s company’s Devil Trigger Dante to obtain the original Devil Vermilion Armor. As Vergil and Nero fought, Dante tried to stop them only for the pair to notice him. Although initially they seemed to have no respect for him, as time passed Vergil began to enjoy the bickering between them, while he still viewed Nero with distrust. The spar was short-lived as Nero used his Devil Trigger to resurrect his older brother for the first time in months and the fight began. Nero was surprised by Vergil’s fresh appearance and power as the two dueled. Dante eventually managed to gain the upper hand after Nero was killed by his Devil Trigger, which in turn killed Vergil. However, Nero’s Devil Vermilion Armor was finally destroyed in the aftermath, after Dante’s efforts at protecting Nero, and he was subsequently brought before the Order.
Vergil returns to a place called the Rubicon, stating that he had been residing there, a place where the evil that life and the world itself embodied created the Rubicon that contained all that is dark in them and condemned them to eternal torment. He explained that he had used the awakening of his Devil Vermilion Armor to finish his mission and made contact with Nero who is standing on the other side of a bell hanging in the abyss. He then awaits Dante as he crosses the Rubicon into the abyss. Once he arrives, they discover Nero’s company’s Yamato inside an ancient, once-functional bell, which enables the characters to cross the Rubicon to the door that Nero wants Dante to open.
Throughout the main story, Dante employs the Devil Sword Dante, known as “The Devil’s Blade”. He is proficient enough with the sword to use it to single-handedly kill an Oni, slashing it from its head and slicing the demon in half with each swing. Initially shown with great confidence, Dante initially hardly holds back, swinging his weapon to kill each demon he encounters, even if that means he has to get quite close to do so, and though he later displays calmer thoughts and uses the sword more sparingly, he still utilizes it to kill powerful demons easily, such as the Oni known as “The Elemental”. It is implied that the sword was forged by Vergil himself, as it is a very powerful weapon and Vergil himself has stated that it only leaves the power of the Devil Sword dormant when not in use. The blade is a more flexible sword than the Devil Bringer, and can be morphed in a multitude of ways, opening up its infinite variety. The sword is equipped with an infinite amount of Devil Fruits inside of it, making it perfect for as long as you hold the sword, and it requires the perfect combination of three Devil Fruits to transform the sword into its Devil Claws when using it. The sword can be put into its upgraded form Devil Claws using up all three Devil Fruits. Devil Sword Dante can be used with Dante’s Devil Trigger if necessary, allowing him to release the full potential of the weapon. This form was used for the first time in Devil May Cry 4 in the final battle with Vergil, which resulted in Dante instantly killing the Oni with one swing.
During the events of Devil May Cry 3 , Dante wears a similarly customized, gothic-inspired outfit, with black pants and boots, and a black-patterned coat with a collar, although the coat has long, black sleeves rather than white cuffs. Beneath the coat, Dante wears a black shirt, buttoned up to his neck, and is wearing a single piece of black underwear. At the end of the game, Dante is summoned by his demonic father to rescue Nero from the Qliphoth. In the climax, the Devil Hunter is seen dueling Vergil for the fourth time, but instead of shooting a barrage of fireballs at him, Dante summons his Devil Sword Devil. The sword is sheathed above Dante’s head, and the Devil Slayer gloves are attached to the sword. Vergil attacks, and the pair engage in a sword-swinging fight with each other. Dante is critically injured during the encounter, and his Devil Claws detach from his Devil Sword Devil, and he is forced to strike his sword’s guard to keep his arms from falling off, only for his Devil Sword Devil to transform into its Devil Claws after, and begin stabbing his body. Dante is eventually revived by his team, and is left with 10% of his health and a scar on his abdomen.
