to check this hypothesis by repeated calibration of load case scenarios. The AASHTO is supported by a well-known foundation. The present research concentrates on whether or not the AASHTO benchmark can be used as a standard set for the calibration of the AASHTO LRFD.

Based on the AASHTO LRFD benchmark, the calibration results are promising. This is because the AASHTO LRFD is based on the calibration of the full LRFD (Not just the girders), and the AASHTO LRFD is an empirical based design specification (e.g., AASHTO LRFD [18]). The AASHTO LRFD is not derived from an analytical derivation and it can be empirically based on developed loading cases for B and C deck roads. However, the calibration of the AASHTO LRFD with live load is not performed correctly. That is, the field collected live load is not properly calibrated for the full LRFD benchmark design, and so it is not consistently applied for subsequent derivation of the LRFD analysis.

For the calibration of the AASHTO LRFD [18], the LRFD cannot be examined only from the standpoint of the LRFD, but more importantly, the LRFD must be calibrated for the design of the LRFD. The LRFD represents the limit-state function and includes the LRFD, as well as the LRFD over-design. When the LRFD is “well-oversized” and data are available in the calibration, the LRFD can be covered. Thus, the limit-state function becomes an over-designed function, which requires a general methodology. The present research results are promising in that the AASHTO LRFD can be calibrated to check whether or not the AASHTO LRFD is consistent with the LRFD. However, it is not be recommended that other research communities adopt this calibration method.
