vishal bhardwaj’s ‘the blue umbrella’ is inspired from ruskin bond’s novella. in the story, a village girl named biniya (played by bips bhattacharya) lives in a remote part of the himalayas with her widowed mom (shweta menon) and wrestler brother (navin chaddha). while biniya plays with tourists in the village, she trades her bear-tooth amulet with a blue umbrella. she and her umbrella are highly popular with the tourists and the local villagers. but one day, she gets so annoyed with the presence of a red-and-white japanese umbrella that she sells it off. the umbrella that she has lost, goes missing. the entire village sympathizes with biniya, and the police turn nandkishore khatri’s (pankaj kapur) house upside down but fail to locate her umbrella.

as a storyteller, vishal bhardwaj has a knack of narrating a story well and also extracting wonderful performances from the cast. in the blue umbrella, the director succeeds in conveying a message [greed can ruin the best of relationships] forcefully towards the end, when the entire village boycotts pankaj kapur for robbing the umbrella. the second hour, in particular the concluding reels, are highly absorbing.
