AutoCAD was first released for the Apple II in 1982. The first released version of AutoCAD used a raster graphics display, but later versions have used vector graphics. AutoCAD is the primary commercial CAD tool in the industry and supports the following file formats: DXF (also known as DWG), DGN, DXR, IGES, INX, PDF (via raster to PDF converter), QXD, and XREF.[2]

On 25 February 2003 Autodesk replaced the Autocad trademark with the term AutoCAD in all marketing, sales, and support materials for the desktop version, and removed it from its products for mobile and web-based applications. Autodesk previously marketed the Autocad product line, which included AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT, as a registered trademark.

The current release of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and the mobile apps are generally only available to Autodesk customers, while the desktop version and software for web-based applications are available for a number of license types and pricing.

Free and open-source alternatives include the following: LibreCAD is an open-source, cross-platform, CAD program with very good basic drawing capabilities, and Blender can be used to create and manipulate 3D models and animation.

New features

Many of the initial versions of AutoCAD have since been superseded by newer versions. The most current version of AutoCAD, which has been available since AutoCAD 2016, is AutoCAD LT. AutoCAD 2016 introduced the following new features:

Realistic shadows, in which a light source is represented in drawings.

Improved support for higher-resolution color graphics displays.

The ability to integrate navigation tools with the drawing area. For example, the Move cursor or the Dimension snap or gap tools can be used with navigation to create guides for other objects.

Enhanced support for large drawings

AutoCAD features several options that limit the size of the drawing area. These are an overall scaling limit on the size of all drawings, setting the scaling for individual layers, defining the maximum number of drawing units on each layer, and setting a maximum dimension value (X value). These settings can be applied to the whole drawing or can be set for each individual layer in a drawing. The option to limit the overall size of the drawing was introduced with Auto

Add-ons
There are a large number of AutoCAD add-ons available. Some provide 3D functionality. (These are often associated with CAD software, but can be found for many other software packages as well.)

The Autodesk Exchange Apps store has Autodesk shareware, as well as a wide range of paid-for add-ons for Autodesk software. It also offers a free trial period for most add-ons.

AutoCAD LT
AutoCAD LT (formerly AutoCAD R14) is AutoCAD’s free/Open Source edition. It can be used to draw basic 2D drawings, although some functionality and customizability is limited compared to AutoCAD. It can also be used to write scripts and modify the product’s source code, although customization of LT is fairly limited compared to LT. It also lacks 3D capability.

AutoCAD Raster
AutoCAD Raster is an addition to the LT suite. Unlike AutoCAD LT, it can be used to write scripts and modify the product’s source code. However, it lacks 3D capability.

AutoCAD Architecture (formerly “AutoCAD Architectural Desktop”)

AutoCAD Architecture is a professional 2D drafting application for architects and building designers. It has a 3D modeling environment that uses accurate and well-designed models of the various building types. In addition to 3D modeling, it can also be used to create a 2D drawing by converting 3D geometry to 2D. AutoCAD Architecture supports advanced drafting tools, detailing, and engineering.

AutoCAD Architecture is also available as a free/Open Source edition. The Open Architecture Add-on for AutoCAD Architecture (AA) adds advanced 3D modeling features, such as support for various 3D modeling packages and the ability to create geometric surfaces for models.

AutoCAD Civil 3D
AutoCAD Civil 3D is a 3D modeling, visualization, and engineering software that can be used for building, transportation, utilities, dams, bridges, and other infrastructure. AutoCAD Civil 3D is a two-dimensional drafting application that is based on AutoCAD Architecture, and is the only 3D application which has architectural components.

Other

Many drawing commands now have a more streamlined appearance.
