The early AutoCAD releases used the term “model,” a word that has since become associated with geometrical objects (e.g., “model building”). This term was one of AutoCAD’s distinguishing features. With Autodesk’s acquisition of a rival, the most recent AutoCAD release is AutoCAD 2020.

AutoCAD has become the most widely used commercial CAD application in the world and remains the standard for creating 2D and 3D drafting. One of the core advantages of AutoCAD over other CAD applications is that AutoCAD is a centralized drafting application, which means that there is only one user at a computer console (and one user interface), and all other users are “connected” to the user at the computer console.

These are the main programming interfaces used by users to write their own applications or plug-ins for AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT:
AutoLISP
AutoCAD Visual LISP, known as VLISP or AutoCAD VL, which was a version of AutoCAD developed by Carl Bassett from 1993 to 1995. It was very popular in the late 1980s and 1990s, but fell out of favour due to performance problems and Microsoft’s acquisition of Visual Works and Visual LISP was abandoned. It was succeeded by its successor, VBA, which is supported by both AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT. VL is still available from third-party developers.
Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), an object-oriented Microsoft Windows macro programming language which provides the macro environment used in the native Windows version of AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT.
.NET, an object-oriented programming language which is supported by AutoCAD LT.
ObjectARX, an API for interfacing with AutoCAD’s native object model, which was used in the original plug-ins that provided drawing-based utilities and applications.

History
AutoCAD started with object-oriented programming and GUIs, and the first commercially available version was released in 1983.

In 1988, the German company Computer Systems for Engineers GmbH created an object-oriented architecture for AutoCAD. The “CSE” architecture was replaced with the Visual LISP language in 1991. AutoCAD version 2 was first released in 1989. AutoCAD was initially written in FORTRAN and ObjectARX for compatibility with its predecessors, namely PRAAD and PLATO.

In 1993, Autodesk announced that it would offer the development environment and application source code for AutoCAD, instead of forcing users to buy a license for the software. In 1995, Autodesk released AutoCAD Architecture, one of the first applications that used the CSE architecture.

Many investors, including me, still lament that the best-known rule book in the history of finance, that of the U.S. securities and exchanges, is not effective, fair or in harmony with the U.S. legal system. In contrast, one of the most effective rule books is the national crime code.

It took over a century for a code to become comprehensive, and it is often only after the fact that a code is appreciated as a comprehensive instrument that was a great benefit to society. The national crime code, also called the penal code, first developed in Great Britain and was later adopted by the United States. A century later, the United States is the only country in the world that has not adopted a comprehensive penal code.

The penal code system relies on the rule of law, and I will argue that the United States has fallen into the opposite extreme, relying instead on the rule of interpretation. I will also make the case that the U.S. system is particularly problematic because it is a federalist system, relying on a single code to regulate the entire country.

A code is a comprehensive instrument, with as much utility and legal authority as any other codified rule. This is why the law of criminal procedure, the code dealing with the procedural rules of criminal litigation, is often the most comprehensive of any. The law of criminal procedure rests on a rule of law, and it applies not just to criminal prosecutions but also to civil litigation involving allegations of criminal conduct.

A federalist system does not work well, and the United States has the best-known example. The United States has divided authority among the federal, state and local governments.

The problem with such a system is that when the federal government or a state or a local government does something that is not consistent with the rules as they are written, but is consistent with what they think, the system tends to collapse.
