The NCAA has ruled that Auburn’s basketball program was not in full compliance with NCAA regulations during the 2013-14 season, but only after the Tigers had already defeated Kentucky in the national championship.

The agency delivered the first of two major sanctions against Auburn on Wednesday. The other came in a letter Aug. 6 to Auburn’s athletic director, Lee Sparks. The second will come in the next two days.

The initial sanctions are short- and long-term reductions of scholarships. The NCAA will continue to fine Auburn for each game the basketball team plays above the permitted level. Auburn’s penalties were set forth in a June 18 notice of allegations. Auburn’s penalties were announced at a school news conference Wednesday morning.

When the NCAA says that a school was not in full compliance with NCAA regulations, it means that a school did not act in full compliance with NCAA regulations during a specific time period. The NCAA did not, for example, accuse the men’s basketball team of having run a pay-for-play scheme.
