What’s New In AutoCAD?

[The below are my own comments, comments are not reviewed by Autodesk]

One of the things I want to comment on is Markup. I was on a break when Markup was demoed and I noticed that they seemed to be demoing it as though it were a new feature. It seems to me that Markup has a long history, and with the advent of Civil 3D, they have already incorporated more or less every tool that Markup had to offer into Civil 3D.

On Markup Assist, it seems to be more of a replacement of many things that are in the current drawing suite, such as Pipe with Flow and Path with Stream. I am not sure how you would use Markup Assist and how that compares to the current Markup functionality in Civil 3D, but I think it looks like a good feature.

I was not able to get any information on this, but I would not be surprised if Civil 3D will incorporate more or less the functionality of Markup Assist as Civil 3D expands into that direction. Civil 3D will be drawing friendly while looking more like AutoCAD, and I would not be surprised if a lot of the things on Markup Assist come into Civil 3D.

One other thing is that the use of “Markup” with a lower case m seems to make sense. Historically, Markup used a lower case M.

A few other things that I might have commented on are:

Dynamic Text:

Dynamic text has a long history, but this time I was a bit surprised that the functionality to place a text box on an object was integrated into the standard Dynamic Text tool. I had not seen that in the past.

It is one of the things that I will probably use a lot, especially on furniture.

Text Commands:

We have always been able to use text commands to do a lot of the things that are listed as “Text Commands”, but I will have to admit that I never really used them much. I use Word quite a bit, so the ability to select a text on a piece of paper and use the keyboard to replace it with a description of the object was the only time that I ever used it.
