AutoCAD is the most widely used CAD software application worldwide, and, according to market research firm Gartner, its worldwide market share is approximately 35%. Gartner also ranks AutoCAD as the world’s #1 CAD software application, based on its estimated annual revenues. This means that an estimated $9.3 billion of AutoCAD revenue was generated in 2018.

This article discusses several features of AutoCAD that can be useful for architecture, including a 3D model viewer, multiple drawing and sheet-based editing modes, and tools for drafting, modeling, and presentation. It also describes how to use the 2D drawing mode to create image-based floor plans, and how to apply data from the landscape, people, or product categories in AutoCAD to create custom floor plans.

The interface for creating a building drawing is shown in Figure 1. When a new building is opened, the drawing contains a number of default entities, as shown in Figure 2. These entities are categorized into groups.

The entities in a drawing are organized in a hierarchy, as shown in Figure 3. Entities can be grouped into groups, which can be further divided into subgroups. In Figure 3, the entities highlighted in blue are in the Building group. They can be further subdivided into the Design group, shown in yellow, and the Structure group, shown in green.

Data and Properties Sheets [ edit ]

Data and Properties Sheets are two ways to control the appearance and content of a building in AutoCAD. AutoCAD uses data and properties sheets to control changes to a building.

Data sheets are used to control the overall look of a building by changing the texture, color, and other visual attributes of objects. Data sheets are attached to layers, not entities. Layers can be added to a building model from the Layer Manager. Figure 4 shows a default data sheet.

Entities are created on top of a layer. As shown in Figure 5, the floor plan is defined as a floor on top of the Blueprint layer, which is attached to the floor plan. A blueprint layer can contain multiple entities,

Modules

Modules are similar to extensions in that they add capabilities to AutoCAD. They are a distinct form of plugins. Modules can be placed within an active drawing, either temporarily or permanently. This allows the user to turn them on or off at run-time. The type of each module is indicated by an icon in the status bar, which can be clicked on to view the full name of the module. As a result of the integration of object-oriented programming, modules are written in C++ or Delphi. There are a large number of available modules.

AutoCAD Exchange
The AutoCAD Exchange (Exchange) allows users to import and export 3D objects from AutoCAD through a browser-based application. 3D objects are referenced through the “.cad” file extension. The AutoCAD Exchange offers the following features:

Integrates CAD models, project files and documentation for file exchange
Access to local files from a CAD model and project file by means of a special folder on the file system, to which all user-entered data, documents, macros and drawing files are stored. The CAD Exchange also integrates CAD model and project files from popular CAD file formats. The maximum file size is roughly 1.2 GB per file type. The CAD Exchange enables users to automatically tag imported CAD files when they are imported, and it enables users to “restrict” imported CAD files to a specific folder on the file system. The maximum number of files is 50 per folder. The user interface does not allow viewing the contents of the CAD Exchange folder, although the contents can be viewed using an external viewer.

In this column, I’ll explore new features in the latest version of AutoCAD. This month, we’ll look at two new features, Markup Import and Markup Assist. AutoCAD 2023 is the latest release of AutoCAD in 25 years, and it includes features to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of your drafting work.

Markup Import:

In recent versions of AutoCAD, you could import graphics into a drawing from an external source such as a PDF document, but with Markup Import, you can also directly import graphics from, say, a whiteboard or clip board into a drawing.

This is a simple procedure that can be done quickly and efficiently. After you import the graphics, you can edit or change the imported drawing and then save it back to the source. The imported graphics retain their connection to the drawing in which they were imported.

You can import graphics from a PDF, printout, clipboard, or the newly added Markup Assist function.

You can quickly set up a template that you can use for any new drawings you do using the New Template option. This option is available under Preferences, where you can also select which drawing styles to use.

To import graphics, open the Edit drawing screen, choose Customize\Manage Data, and then click the Insert option.

In the Insert drawing dialog box, choose the Markup and Snaps option, select the source type of graphics, and click OK.

In the Import drawing dialog box, navigate to the folder with the graphics and press OK.

The graphics appear in the drawing as regular objects. Double-click the graphic to open it and begin editing it. If you want to save the graphics to the drawing, you can do so using the Save As option in the Save Drawing As dialog box.

When you finish editing the graphic, press the Finish button in the drawing. When you finish editing the drawing, a dialog box reminds you to save it.

You can import images from a PDF, printout, or a clipboard. To do this, open the Import drawing dialog box, navigate to the folder that holds the graphics, select the type of graphics that you want to import, and then
