The first computer-aided design (CAD) software used a mouse and a single windows-based graphical user interface (GUI). Early applications used an “raster” bitmap graphics model with no “vector” line drawing capability.

Firms increasingly needed a more flexible and adaptable drawing tool that would allow them to draft multiple designs concurrently on the same screen. Additionally, CAD users needed better interoperability with other engineering and drafting tools. This led to the development of AutoCAD in 1982, which offered desktop graphics and some form of text editing, and thus enabled firms to perform multiple tasks on a single CAD computer.

AutoCAD is used in a wide variety of engineering and drafting applications. These include industrial design, electrical schematic design, mechanical design, electrical design, building and civil engineering, architectural design, package design, oil and gas well engineering, piping systems design, plant engineering, ship design, military and aeronautical design, microelectronics design, mechanical and process design, robotics design, industrial and structural design, and construction management. It is also used in the aerospace and automotive industry, civil engineering, home construction, railroad and steel industry, architectural design and architectural engineering, and in the electrical, plumbing, and HVAC industries. Some clients use it to produce technical drawings for the media as well. AutoCAD is used in academia as a supplemental drawing tool.

A recent survey of engineering schools showed that 60% of programs used AutoCAD for both course and design work, 29% used it only for course work, and 11% of schools did not use CAD software at all.[1]

Many engineering design firms have moved away from desktop CAD entirely, using only on-screen, computer-aided design (CAD) tools to speed up the design process, as desktop CAD is labor-intensive and is often time-consuming. [2]

AutoCAD was designed for both professional and home users. Professional users include those that design 3D models for industry, the military, and architecture. Home users include those that design home plans and small household items. The end-user interface and the degree of sophistication of the functions for each user are both much different. The main differences are that the professional tools are easier to learn, have more functions, and provide much more functionality. AutoCAD is often referred to as a tool with “power”.

AutoLISP has been the target of criticism for the way in which it is used in CAD, although it is widely supported by the CAD industry. It is rarely used because AutoCAD does not provide an Autocad LISP compiler, although AutoLISP provides the programmer with an interactive Lisp environment in which to design macros.

Visual LISP is an in-application programming language similar to BASIC and Visual Basic. It is a two-dimensional language that is designed for the use in AutoCAD applications. Visual LISP’s grammar is similar to that of BASIC. Visual LISP is an object-oriented programming language, and supports the use of the visual interfaces of AutoCAD. Visual LISP does not have a macro language, nor does it include an auto-documenter.

Excel VBA uses macro programming. Although it was originally used to perform small macros and VBA functions, it has evolved into a general purpose language used to create applications. VBA can be used as an in-application programming language within the product. For instance, in VBA, text can be changed with many more ways than AutoCAD. VBA has a built-in module for GUI creation, which is limited only by the “windows” that are defined. VBA is made for use with Excel, but can easily be used for other applications as well.

(CNN) — A gunman opened fire at a church in central San Diego Wednesday evening, killing one person and injuring four others, police said.

Dawn Laguens, a spokeswoman for the San Diego Police Department, said the man started firing with a handgun at a bar that is located next door to the church, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

As the man was leaving the bar, he exchanged fire with someone outside the church, Laguens said.

“It appears the two exchanged fire and the suspect ran to the church,” she said.

Laguens said there is no indication the man went inside the church.

She said the suspect’s condition is not known at this time.

“The shooter was in custody within minutes of the police arriving on scene,” she said.

The name of the victim and the name of the suspect were not released.
