AutoCAD is a professional CAD system, designed to support the drafting and drawing needs of engineers, architects, designers, students, and hobbyists. It allows for the creation of 2D and 3D drawings, as well as 2D and 3D models. A person who creates a drawing, model, or project using AutoCAD is referred to as an Autodesk Certified User (ACU).

History

AutoCAD’s origins go back to the 1980s, when the company’s first AutoCAD product was released. AutoCAD’s first release was in 1982 on the IBM PC. In 1986, the original AutoCAD was bundled with the Apple II personal computer.

In 1987, AutoCAD V1.0 was released for the Apple II. V1.0 was a full-fledged program, based on the Sbml system and using a dedicated “AutoCAD” font and a program icon (for the first time) to distinguish it from an Apple II program that had no main graphic display. The program’s name was derived from “AutoCAD”, in reference to the Computer-Aided Design (CAD) market where it was aimed. It was released on a 3.5″ floppy disk with a maximum capacity of 60 MB.

In 1989, AutoCAD V2.0 for Apple II, released on a 5.25″ disk with a maximum capacity of 400 MB, had major user interface changes. The main user interface was simplified and icons were removed. It supported Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), the common graphic format on the Apple II. The Apple II was the first platform to have the capability to display 256 colors. In 1989, a modified version of the app appeared on the Atari ST. The Apple II version was released with a new name, AutoCAD Extended.

In 1992, AutoCAD was released on the Amiga and on the Atari ST. In 1992, the company also produced the free for students and teachers version of AutoCAD known as AutoCAD Lite. Interfaces

The ObjectARX library provides several interfaces, such as DA (Direct Access), DAI (Direct Access Interface), DAJ (Direct Access Java), that allow controlling various application functionalities, starting from Visual LISP,.NET, VBA and C/C++.

DAJ offers the.NET programming language interface which is simple to use and to maintain. Its functionality is similar to that of the DAI. DAJ has been developed for easier integration with other programming languages.

The DA interface also provides the API for accessing the native AutoCAD objects and functions from the.NET languages. DA interfaces allow calling native AutoCAD API functions from any language, as well as generating native AutoCAD code from a.NET language, AutoLISP, VBA or other programming language.

From DAJ, DAI and DA, several.NET libraries exist. The DAJ.NET library creates AutoCAD objects from.NET code. It can be used to create data layers and coordinate systems from.NET programs. The DAI and DAJ libraries allow the creation of native AutoCAD objects from.NET code.

The DA interface also provides the.NET programming language interface which is simple to use and to maintain. Its functionality is similar to that of the DAI.

The DA interface also provides the API for accessing the native AutoCAD objects and functions from the Java programming language. Java objects (such as shapes, linetypes, lc_objects, etc.) can be created using the DAJ Java API, and they can be used in Java code. Native AutoCAD objects can be used by Java code through the DAI API.

From the DA interface, the DAI library creates native AutoCAD objects from Java code. DAI Java can be used to generate Java code from.NET programs, or to create Java objects from AutoCAD data.

The DA interface also provides the API for accessing the native AutoCAD objects and functions from the Visual Basic programming language. Visual Basic objects (such as shapes, linetypes, lc_objects, etc.) can be
