Photoshop is a complex program; the program interface is not easy to use. That’s not surprising considering the high levels of image editing that most people do.

Photoshop provides extensive support for retouching people, whether you’re a makeup artist or not. It’s the standard in the professional editing software field, and I recommend starting out with Photoshop.

The next section provides an overview of the Photoshop interface.

Photoshop’s Interface

Photoshop’s interface is very easy to use for most people. It also features a few significant oddities, such as layers and paths, that you need to get familiar with. It’s probably easiest to start using Photoshop at the bottom, where you work on actual objects. In the following sections, I highlight some of the most common interface buttons, but you can refer to the online help pages, to gain even more information.

Getting started with the toolbar

You start Photoshop using the same toolbar that you use in other programs — the application launcher — by clicking the Eye Icon at the top left of the screen. This opens the program’s window and allows you to launch the program, edit it, and manipulate it. Figure 13-1 shows the Photoshop window, the program’s main interface. You can reposition the program window by dragging it on the desktop.

When you’re ready to start the program, you can do so by clicking the Photoshop Icon at the lower right corner of the program window. (This icon looks like a stylized paintbrush.) You’ll find a number of Photoshop icons by this icon.

In addition to this icon, you can access the program by double-clicking the Eye Icon in the bottom-left corner of the program window. You can also type the name of the program into the Help files, and the screen will show you the appropriate icons.

To work with Photoshop’s tools, your toolbars are important. On the left side of the window are four toolbars, like the ones in Figure 13-2:

The Photoshop Toolbar: Contains the main image tools, including the drawing tools, the brush, and the collection of spot editing tools.

The Layers Panel: Contains the interface for adding and manipulating layers, which is the subject of Chapter 14.

Click on the “New” button and then click on “Open” on the next page.

Choose an image file to open it.

You can choose from the following:

Choose folder to open the file

Open all files in the folder

Choose the “Use Explorer to locate your files” option to navigate to the image files in a folder

Then you have to choose the image size. You can choose one of the following sizes:

3:2 (Image will be cropped to a 3:2 ratio)

4:3 (Image will be cropped to a 4:3 ratio)

8:7 (Image will be cropped to a 8:7 ratio)

16:10 (Image will be cropped to a 16:10 ratio)

One of the best things about this software is that is has very straight forward and intuitive interface.

Check the boxes next to the images you wish to use.

Double click on the checkbox to select the image.

Once you have finished, click on the “Create” button to start the editing process.
